 | | | Lucio & Pep "Carpentieri EP" Posted by 365 Mag - Youri Jozee, 12 Febuary 2007 CARPENTIERI EP
Artist: Lucio and Pep
Label : Elektrotribe
Rating: 7.0 out of 10.0
Released: Out Now
Type: Single
Italian-based production duo Lucio & Pep (real names: Giuseppe and Lucio Carpentieri) are pushing borders by creating music that is certainly unique in its kind. Their sound comes closest to a rocking mix of electro, club, acid and techno and with this re-release on the Elektrotribe imprint, it is once again proven why these brothers are so popular in the Italian clubscene.
This release comes with five tracks that present the sound of the production duo. The first track, entitled Marcito, kicks off with a solid kick and a rhythm that is best described as uptempo electro. The sequence is spiced up with lots of different, scorching synths and minimal percussion. By using a lot of break, the track does not end up in endless loops, but enables the power of the music to continously evolve. Nice one, although a bit hysterical at some points.
Pep Zomb comes with another solid kick and a rhythm that sounds a bit more techno. Distorted vocals and a simple bass loops put together a cool rhythm, although the overall is a bit too much of the same to really stand out. The production is quite solid, but there are just too little elements to make this one a real stomper. Ancora redeems the level of quality with a hardcore-ish beat, oldschool claps, distorted synths and powerful effects, by which this track becomes the 'punkiest' one on this release. The break in the middle is a good example of how a build-up to the climax should be produced, with all the energy being released when the kick comes in. Awesome! Acidik's combines acid with electro on a raw basis of minimal kicks and percussion. The track revolves around a freaked-out acid bassline and a simple bassdrum, with a simple break being introduced from time to time. This makes the track a real hardcore club track, although I think that the track could have been much better by adding more unecpected breaks. Cool track though, a true dancefloor killer.
Last one on this EP is Let's Go, which kicks in with a simple rhythm sequence. Soon enough, a very cool, low bassline is introduced, capable of building enough attention for the climax to come. And that's exactly the coolest thing about this track. The climax comes in the form of the bassline changing in shape, supported by a very, very simple rhythm. This sounds a bit boring, but believe me, it is not. The minimalistic approach results in maximum effect. Great stuff!
Overall speaking, Lucio & Pep deliver a stomping package that will certainly be of big effect on the dancefloor. The production's quite cool, but some tracks seem to be going in no particular direction. This results in a clash of sounds and sudden breaks with no real use. However, most of the material comes with such great power that this release is definitely one to check out.
